Ginger beer tutorial

Upon general request, we’ve made some low-grade videos on how to make a delicious ginger beer at home.

We’ve split the process up in four simple steps:

  4. Wait

Feel free to share your experience(s) or contact us if you have any questions or need assistance.

Prepare ginger bug

Howto:

  • Combine 250 mL water + 1 tablespoon of grated ginger (with peel) + 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • Cover with a lid or some towels so that no insects can get in.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of grated ginger every other day
  • The bug should be bubbly and ready after about one week

Prepare ginger lemonade

For 2L of ginger beer, prepare 1L of ginger lemonade:

  • Combine 1L of water + 100 g of ginger (other root*) + 160g of sugar
  • Boil for 15 minutes on the stove
  • Leave to cool to room temperature

Combine and bottle

  • Combine 160mL of ginger bug + the prepared ginger lemonade + juice of one lemon (or other additives).
  • Fill up with water until a final volume of 2L is reached.
  • Bottle

Ferment!

  • Leave the bottles for 3-4 days at room temperature
  • Transfer to the fridge for 2-4 weeks.
  • TIP: For newbies, feel free to sample the change of the flavor over time until you get an idea about at which time point you get the best beer, to your taste. For a drier taste, leave it longer in the fridge.

Take your time and ENJOY!! 🙂

* This very same process can be applied to make any other root beer: use the microorganisms on the skin of the root to start a bug, and continue with a sugary root extract to make the beer.
